FL releases more federal housing aid to local governments

Renters and homeowners struggling to pay for housing may qualify for more help from the state following release Friday of $45 million for pandemic relief.

Gov. Ron DeSantis announced Friday that the Florida Housing Finance Corp. approved distribution of the CARES Act funds to local governments specifically to help Floridians struggling with rent and mortgage payments because of COVID-19-related job and business losses.

Another $75 million was released to local governments for similar purposes in July.

The combined $120 million came to Florida through the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act) and was earmarked by DeSantis for housing aid. Another $120 million went to affordable multifamily rental housing, estimated to help more than 10,000 households; and $2 million is earmarked for housing for people with special needs and homeless households.
